Pelvic Girdle Pain in Pregnancy

For many pregnant ladies, their journey starts with an anxious trip to the A&E department fearing the worst. After hours of waiting, and various tests, many travel home with their minds at rest; the baby is ok, but the pelvis is the culprit…and there is nothing they can do for you. The following morning the pain still exists and the diagnosis from the night before hasn’t really helped.

That reality is that 1 in 5 pregnant women suffer from what is commonly known as ‘Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction’. During pregnancy your body produces a particular hormone. The hormone is question, Relaxin, has the job of softening the ligaments (the tough but flexible tissues that connect your bones together) in your pelvis and other joints. This happens for a very good reason as having soft ligaments helps your baby to pass through your pelvis during birth.

Pelvic Girdle Pain can begin as early as the first trimester or as late as days before the birth. Either way it can be an incredibly uncomfortable condition to deal with and often takes away the joy of your pregnancy as all you feel is pain and discomfort. Whether your pain is in the lower back, buttocks, pubic bone, back of your legs or hips, the condition is treatable and the earlier we can deal with the issues the higher the chances of reducing the pain.

Specific techniques are used in the Welsh Clinic in order to reestablish the correct position and function of the pelvis. There are a few stages to the treatment with some ladies, as with any functional problems we treat; some problems are worse than others. But in the majority, Pelvic Girdle Pain is 100% manageable and most often totally fixed with these techniques. If you are currently living with pelvic girdle pain, or you know someone who is, please make an appointment to find out if we can help you…the result is very often remarkable. From the ladies that have already been treated with this condition, it brings the joy back into the journey.
